10 mistakes that are most common in yoga practice

Once you start doing yoga and after a couple of sessions come to the conclusion that yoga does not help - is it familiar?

Yoga is more than physical activity. In addition to the load on the body, the practice includes spiritual and mental aspects. Each lesson will be different, this must be accepted.

If you have experienced disappointment after practice, do not rush to leave the class, as it is likely that after our article you will reconsider your approach and start from scratch.

Worrying about what they think of you

Everyone once came to the mat for the first time. If the first time you can’t enter difficult asanas, you can always adapt the pose to your level of training. The instructor should show all variations of the asana from beginner to advanced.

You should not be distracted by a neighbor and think about what others will think about you and your preparation. Believe me, everyone is focused on themselves and their feelings. It will be great if you also dig deep inside yourself, concentrate on each movement.


Avoid auxiliary equipment

There is a misconception that true yogis do not use yoga props in their practice. Vice versa. If you use auxiliary equipment, for example, yoga blocks, belts, each of your postures will be properly rebuilt and the body will start the processes that are embedded in each asana. Ignore shavasana

We are big fans of asana and we are sure that shavasana can be a separate practice. The corpse pose is the same asana as the rest. It requires great concentration on internal sensations and strength in order to fully relax the whole body.

Hold breath

An important part of yoga is breathing. Before starting a class, breathing practices help to calm down and concentrate on the upcoming work of the mind and body.

Attention to the breath is one type of meditation. Try to focus on inhaling and exhaling - this will help you feel the asana more deeply, feel how the body takes a pose. During breathing, we start beneficial processes in the body, enrich the cells with oxygen, and accelerate the movement of energy in the body.


There is no competition in yoga. As soon as you catch yourself thinking that you are trying to perform an asana better than someone else, stop. Practice affects only your body and mind, it is only your experience. Might be worth competing with yourself. Become a little better than yesterday.

Don't strive to be perfect. It does not exist. Yoga is a philosophy, and everyone has their own. Do not try to understand the essence of yoga as something physical or mental. You need to connect with your inner self, drop the ego, and don't aim for the perfect picture.

The only thing we can control is our thoughts. And often they can be stronger than us. If you are negative about the lesson, do not expect a good result. The mood for yoga is important, try to discard everything superfluous and step on the mat only with thoughts of good.

Don't develop

In order not to fall out of love with yoga, it is important to constantly develop yourself. Once you master the basic level, move on to the next one. Try a new kind of yoga, like trying new asanas. So you form new neural connections in the brain, dopamine is released and we feel much better and are capable of big victories.

Extraneous thoughts in class

Think about the process itself, about breathing, analyze your inner state. Everything else will wait for you one hour and will not go anywhere. Devote this time to yourself and leave your worries at least for a moment.

Taking yoga too seriously

Any fanaticism is not the best strategy in life and yoga is no exception. We greatly honor the ancient practice and respect the teachings and principles that yoga preaches, but it is not necessary to radically change your worldview and leave it with your head. Take it easy and tailor classes to suit your needs and goals.
